Press Conference: Presentation of the IKF EKC-A 2024

The IKF European Korfball Championship A-Division 2024 will be held in Calonge and Sant Antoni from October 28 to November 2. The event was presented at the Municipal Sports Pavilion of Calonge with key figures such as Carlos Campmajó, the local sports councilor, Kira Menén, president of the Catalan Korfball Federation, and Miquel Àngel Tobaruela, the Catalan national team coach.

The tournament will feature the top eight national teams in Europe, divided into two groups. Group A includes the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, and Hungary, while Group B consists of Belgium, Catalonia, the Czech Republic, and England. The group stage matches will take place from October 28 to 30, with the semifinals on November 1 and the final on November 2.

Each team will bring 14 athletes and their technical staff, and significant numbers of fans from countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and England are expected.

Kira Menén highlighted the sport’s mixed-gender nature and controlled physical contact, making it non-violent and appealing. Carlos Campmajó expressed pride in hosting the event and showcasing the municipality to visitors from across Europe.

The local squad

The Catalan team, ranked fifth by the International Korfball Federation, aims for a bronze medal, with their first match against England on October 28. Coach Tobaruela is optimistic about their chances, given their intensive training.

Catalonia has been a full member of the IKF since 2005, with notable achievements including fourth place at the 2011 World Championship in China and third place at the 2016 European Championship in the Netherlands.
